Different houseplants will be suited to self-watering planters better than others, such as Calathea. We do not recommend planting cacti in a self-watering planter as they prefer a drier environment.
Calathea can grow and thrive in a self-watering planter, such as Oasesbox. They require an environment where water is readily available, humid and with a low level of light.
The plant gets stressed if there is not enough water. That is what makes them great to use in a self-watering planter, the irrigation system will allow the plant to absorb the water they require and you have the peace of mind that you are watering your plant enough.
This will help avoid root rot as you are less likely to overwater the plant, keeping them alive. It also reduces the chance of fungal infections as the leaves are not getting wet, as the plant is watered from the roots.
Plants need more water in the summer compared to Winter, the resting period, due to hotter weather. The planter will need to be checked and refilled more often.
